Elon Musk, the owner of the popular micro-blogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter), has unveiled his plan to eliminate the ability to block users on the platform, citing the belief that this feature is nonsensical.
In a succinct declaration, Musk stated on X, “Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs.” This announcement ensued after a post questioned the rationale behind blocking users on X rather than muting them.
Elaborating on the differentiation between muting and blocking, Musk clarified that muting restricts visibility of content from specific users, whereas blocking prevents users from accessing one’s content, following them, or engaging with them.
Musk emphasized that in the future, muting would remain the sole mechanism for content control on X, with blocking retained solely for direct messages.

The decision to do away with the blocking feature raises concerns about potential interaction between spammers and harassers and those who would have previously blocked them. Muting is comparatively less restrictive.

Beyond this alteration, Musk also expressed intentions to address the issue of shadow-banning accounts on his platform. The tech mogul extended an apology for the delay in executing measures to counter shadowbanning.
“Sorry it’s taking so long. There are so many layers of ‘trust & safety’ software that it often takes us hours to figure out who, how and why an account was suspended or shadowbanned,” the tech billionaire posted.
