China’s national legislature passed a bill on Tuesday to strengthen patriotic education for children and families in order to confront difficulties such as historical nihilism and protect national unity.

According to the state-backed Xinhua news agency, the Patriotic Education Law provides a legal guarantee for patriotic education, and some people are at a loss about what is patriotism.

‘Historical nihilism’ is a term used in China to convey widespread skepticism about the Chinese Communist Party’s account of historical events.

The law, which goes into effect on January 1, 2024, defines the roles of central and local government agencies, as well as schools and families.

While the law was designed to foster patriotism, it also emphasizes the need to be rational, inclusive, and open-minded, as well as to open the country to the world and embrace various civilizations.

The law requires that patriotic education respects other countries’ history and cultural traditions and draws inspiration from all of human civilization’s exceptional achievements.

The law also includes specific provisions for other groups of individuals, including government officials, employees, villagers, and inhabitants of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan’s special administrative areas.
