Cargo Ship And Boat Collides On China’s Hainan Island, Leaving 8 Missing

Eight people were missing after a cargo ship collided with a fishing boat near Hainan, with 21 ships and five planes on the scene

A cargo ship collided with a fishing boat near the southern Chinese Hainan island on Wednesday, leaving eight people missing, as search efforts continued.

The SITC Danang container ship, flying the Panamanian flag, collided with a fishing vessel about 15 minutes after midnight (1615 GMT).

The impact caused the fishing vessel to sink, and eight individuals on board fell into the ocean.

According to the report, the incident occurred some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the town of Yinggehai on Hainan’s far southwest coast.

After receiving notification of the incident, Hainan emergency response officials dispatched military and police search teams to the location; as of 5:30 p.m., 21 ships and five planes were at the scene.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
