Waves of Russian shelling and drone assaults hit the southern Ukrainian province of Kherson on Saturday, killing one person and injuring seven, officials said.

Russian soldiers also attacked a power facility in eastern Ukraine closer to the war lines, injuring five workers and shutting out power to the village of Kurakhovo.

Russian forces abandoned trenches on the western bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region a year ago, but continue to shell the area from new positions on the eastern side. Ukrainian troops have set a camp on the eastern side.

Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin claimed a drone assault killed a man in the town of Stanislav, southeast of Kherson, which has been under Ukrainian control but exposed to frequent Russian shelling for the past year.

Several Russian attacks occurred throughout the day, including one protracted assault on residential areas in the early evening, according to Prokudin, and seven individuals were injured.

“In the east, Russian shelling of a thermal power facility in Kurakhove injured five workers and caused a power outage”, said Roman Padun, the head of the local government.

He said that residents were fleeing in droves.

Kurakhove is close to Maryinka, a town on the 1,000-kilometre (600-mile) front line that has been reduced to ruins following months of combat.

According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ evening report, Ukrainian forces withstood two attacks on the town and more than a dozen assaults on the nearby town of Avdiivka, which has been the target of consistent Russian strikes since mid-October.
