While Nepal is still recovering from the tragic earthquake that killed over 157 people, another 3.6-magnitude earthquake hit the Himalayan nation in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck at 04:38:20 a.m. (IST) at a depth of 10 kilometres, 169 kilometres northwest of Kathmandu.
This comes after a massive earthquake with a rating of 6.4 on the Richter Scale shook Nepal late Saturday.
This was followed by additional aftershocks of magnitude 3.3 on Saturday afternoon, compounding the difficulties encountered by the afflicted populace and putting the region’s resilience to the test.
Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had assessed the situation earlier in the day. visited the impacted areas and acknowledged the tremendous damage.
In response, the government has mobilized the Nepal Army, Nepali Sentinel, and Armed Police Force to execute helicopter rescue operations.
Health personnel are also being deployed quickly, armed with crucial medical supplies supplied from neighboring regions.
Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal stated, “There has been a lot of damage in the earthquake-affected area. Hundreds of people are injured, thousands of houses have been destroyed, and our government is engaged in relief work”.
He went on to say, “We have deployed the Nepali Army, Nepali Sentinel. The Armed Police Force has been given the responsibility of taking all the injured to the hospitals for rescue through helicopters”.
India, Nepal’s neighbor, has offered assistance at this difficult time. Following the initial earthquake, India issued an emergency phone line for Indians in Nepal who needed immediate assistance.
The Indian Embassy in Nepal tweeted, “Alert Emergency Contact Number for Indians requiring assistance due to the recent earthquake in Nepal: 977-9851316807 MEA India”, through its official ‘X’ handle.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his heartfelt condolences for the deaths and significant destruction caused by the earthquake in Nepal. PM Modi emphasized India’s willingness to provide all possible aid to Nepal.
The earthquake’s repercussions have not been limited to Nepal. Tremors were felt in a number of North Indian districts, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
