Tragedy struck Gaza during a humanitarian aid drop on Friday. The parachute malfunctioned, causing the goods to crash into a group of people waiting for food. Unfortunately, five people lost their lives, and around 10 others were injured. The hospital that received the casualties is Al-Shifa, but there’s confusion about which country’s plane was involved. While Jordan and the US deny responsibility, it’s believed that Belgium, Egypt, France, and the Netherlands were part of the aid operation.
The Gaza government wasn’t happy about the aid drops, calling them ineffective and more like a flashy show than genuine help. They’re pushing for food to be delivered through land routes instead. The EU and UN also weighed in, saying that dropping aid from the sky or using boats isn’t sufficient – they want more trucks to bring supplies through regular borders.
Zooming out, the Israel-Hamas conflict has been ongoing since last October. It’s caused a lot of suffering, with casualties and people having to leave their homes. After five months of fighting, there are attempts to negotiate a break from the violence, especially with Ramadan approaching. However, Israel isn’t participating in those talks, making the situation quite complex.
