On Sunday, officials said, at least 27 people, including eight children, died in northwest Pakistan as a result of heavy rain and strong winds.
A spokesman for the provincial disaster management office, Taimur Ali Khan said, “At least 12 people were buried alive after the roofs and walls of their houses collapsed”.
Storms struck four areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province late Saturday, killing 15 people, including five siblings aged two to eleven.
“More than 140 individuals were injured and more than 200 livestock died”, Mr. Khan continued.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency in all four districts.
Last summer, Pakistan was pounded by extraordinary monsoon rains, which submerged a third of the country, damaged two million homes, and killed over 1,700 people.
Meanwhile, authorities in the country’s south stated on Sunday that said on Sunday that a cyclone was approaching Pakistan and India from the Arabian Sea.
The provincial disaster management office in Sindh province issued a statement warning of exceptionally heavy rainfall and winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour later this week.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into the open sea until the system is over by June 17”, the statement added.
