In an odd instance, a woman in the Netherlands was astonished when an AK-47 was delivered to her house after it was bought on the dark web without her knowledge by her eight-year-old son. Barbara Gemen, a human resources expert, spoke to the media about how her son became involved in cybercrime at an early age. She claimed that when he was eight years old, her son started spending a lot of time in front of the computer and engaging in hacking.
“He started ordering things on the Internet without paying,” said Gemen. She continued by saying that while her son’s purchases on the dark web first consisted of insignificant items like “free” pizza, they gradually evolved into more gruesome ones.

According to the media source, the parent said that her kid used cryptic code words like “Pitt is coming to our place” whenever she entered a room to conceal his transactions with illegal actors through online games. She continued by saying that the hackers had also used her kid to transfer money for other people.
She didn’t grasp how serious the situation was, though, until an AK-47 was handed to her door. “I think he spent a month figuring out how to order the gun and have it shipped to our home,” recalled Gemen, adding that the gun was routed by her son from Poland to Bulgaria so as to avoid customs.
“He opened it and he was really, really excited that he managed to get a gun delivered to our home. I was completely shocked. I immediately decided to do things differently at home,” she said.

Gun handed over to police, no legal action taken
Speaking to the media, Gemen said that she turned the gun over to the neighbourhood police department and that no legal action was taken against her child by the authorities. She continued, mentioning that her son’s personality had also changed. “He started to wake up at night to sit behind a computer and he was really stressed. And that’s when we find out he was working with a group of international hackers,” she stated.
Gemen asked law enforcement for help after she was contacted by them, but she claims that her worry was rejected as “exaggeration”. After that, she claimed, she made the decision to pursue a career in cybersecurity and joined the Dutch Police as a Cyber Special Volunteer.
“It’s so easy these days because a lot of kids have laptops and cell phones and you can basically do a hack with a few clicks. It’s a quite big issue to prevent young people from hacking. They often don’t know what’s legal or what’s illegal,” Gemen said.
