Unpacking Apple Intelligence, Zoom Fatigue, And The Dangers Of Risky VPNs

There is still much to clarify about Apple’s plans to roll out Apple Intelligence with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, likely arriving in late September following the iPhone keynote. It’s improbable that Apple will enable availability in batches during an extended test period. Apple typically doesn’t have users sign up for a waiting list for software functionality. Instead, there might be phased releases for Apple Intelligence, Siri improvements, and ChatGPT integration. Apple has not yet spoken about availability, and current online discussions are speculative. Apple’s biggest challenge won’t be acceptability but ensuring that unpredictable generative AI models remain controlled.

Apple Intelligence- A Powerful Tool In The Future

Conversations with Apple executives at the WWDC keynote revealed that Apple’s on-device and server models are in-house efforts, not OpenAI’s GPT-4o. This distinction won’t impact how Apple’s AI models work, learn, or respond. If a query requires specialized learning for detailed responses, users will have the option to invoke GPT. Users will control whether to enable this. Despite these controls, Apple faces several challenges, given the unpredictable nature of generative AI.

Here are key points:

1. Generative AI only works well with vast amounts of data, and even then, errors are common.
2. Apple must balance task complexity, contextual layering, and personalization without compromising data privacy while minimizing hallucinations, false positives, and offensive content.
3. Apple will not use user data to train models. Training and context will rely on broader activity trends, with as much computation as possible on the device.
4. Apple’s models will not retain user queries. OpenAI will also not store data or IP addresses when users access ChatGPT within Siri and Writing Tools.

The outcome of these efforts remains to be seen, but this represents Apple’s biggest challenge in years. Apple Intelligence’s systemwide integration will significantly increase user interactions with AI. The pressure is on.

Apple executives confirmed that the agreement with OpenAI for GPT-4o is limited to Siri interactions. If users sign in to their OpenAI account with a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription, the agreement ensuring no data storage and IP address masking by OpenAI does not apply.

In contrast, the situation with free Android VPN apps is concerning. Simon Migliano, Head of Research at Top10VPN.com, highlighted several issues. A detailed study shows that 88% of free VPNs suffer data leaks (IP, DNS, WebRTC), with around 17% affected by multiple leaks. Additionally, 71% of these apps share personal data with third parties, including Facebook, Yandex, and data brokers like Kochava. Furthermore, 15% contain Bytedance tracking code, and 53% have risky functions in their source code. Given the cost of VPNs, users often opt for free versions, not realizing these services may sell their data to the highest bidder. I recommend reading Migliano’s detailed study to identify the worst offenders and take corrective measures.
