MP Amol Kolhe of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has criticized the Mumbai Traffic Police’s method of collecting traffic fines. Kolhe’s criticism followed his traffic stop by a female police officer, who requested that he pay an online fee for his car, which had 15 outstanding e-challans totaling ₹ 16,900.
Kolhe claimed in a tweet that the traffic cops were “harassing” him and that he was “shocked” by the occurrence. In addition, he questioned the necessity of using so many e-challans.
“I had a really startling experience. My car was stopped by a female Mumbai Traffic Police officer, who requested that I pay the fee online. As I was looking through her phone, I noticed an order that stated ₹25,000 needed to be picked up from at least 20 cars,” Mr. Kolhe wrote. He continued by criticizing the actions of the traffic police and the government.

Mumbai has 652 traffic intersections. A daily total of ₹ 1,63,00,000 (25,000 x 652) = ₹ 1.63 crore in Mumbai alone. What about the other cities? The public will be able to determine whether the traffic department is being utilized for recovery instead of traffic regulation if the ministers or officials in question make their disclosures public,” he continued.

The Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) disclosed that Mr. Kolhe’s car has collected outstanding fines from 15 e-challans, totaling ₹16,900, after he tweeted.
In response to Mr. Kolhe’s tweet, the Mumbai Traffic Police stated that “since January 1, 2019, there has been a fine amount of over ₹ 685 crore outstanding on more than 1.31 crore e-challans in the city of Mumbai for violating the Motor Vehicle Act.” To collect this fine amount for the government and to enforce traffic discipline among drivers who break traffic laws, a penalty collection drive is conducted on weekends.”
