French Woman Hit By Meteorite, Geologist Calls It ‘Rare Event’

A woman in France was peacefully enjoying her coffee when she was actually hit by a meteorite in a ‘rare event’. The news of this incident comes from the village of Alsace in eastern France. As per the reports from a local newspaper, the woman was sitting with her friend and enjoying coffee on the terrace of her house when this happened. They suddenly heard a loud boom on July 6.

The rare meteorite hit

The woman said, “I heard a big ‘Poom’ coming from the roof next to us. In the second that followed, I felt a shock on the ribs. I thought it was an animal, a bat!” the woman told the news outlet. “We thought it was a piece of cement, the one we apply to the ridge tiles. But it didn’t have the color.”

She claimed that the stone hit her in the chest, bruising it when it bounced off the roof.

Geologist examine the ROCK!

Later, the unnamed woman had the rock inspected by geologist Dr. Thierry Rebmann, who verified the item’s extraterrestrial provenance. The meteorite, according to the geologist, included a combination of silicon and iron, which is not very uncommon. However, it is highly uncommon for a meteor to strike a living thing. “Finding a meteor is already uncommon, but to be in direct contact and have it fall on you, that is astronomically rare,” Dr Rebmann said.

Meteor landing in France is rare

The geologist further stated that in areas with temperate climates, like France, meteor sightings are much more unusual. In actuality, there have only been five times in the twenty-first century where meteorites have been known to touch down in France.

“It’s very rare, in our temperate environments to find them. They merge with other elements. On the other hand, in a desert environment, we can find them more easily,” said Dr Rebmann, who has recommended the rock be studied further so its origins can be determined.
