Prof Salim Engineer, Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), expressed grave concern over the continuing violence in Manipur. He urged the government to take immediate steps to end the unrest and restore peace.
In a statement released to the media, Prof Engineer emphasized that the ongoing turmoil in the state has led to significant suffering among the people, creating a serious threat to the region’s peace and stability.
He stated, “The turmoil in Manipur continues, resulting in immense suffering for the common people and poses a major danger to the very fabric of peace within the state. The government needs to take immediate action to dismantle the cycle of violence that threatens to engulf the state.”
Prof Engineer also expressed his solidarity with all victims of the violence, including the Meitei, Kuki, and other affected communities.
He criticized the apathy of both the state and central governments, calling it unjustifiable.
“The apathy displayed by the state and union governments is deeply concerning, and their indifference to Manipur and failure to bring an end to violence and restore normalcy is completely unjustifiable,” he further added.
The JIH Vice President reiterated the demand for the removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. He accused him of neglecting his constitutional duties and failing to protect the lives and property of the citizens.
He further asserted, “We have been demanding the dismissal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who has abdicated his constitutional duties to secure the lives and property of citizens.”
Prof Engineer Questions Prolonged Violence In Manipur; Suggests Government Officials’ Role
Prof Engineer questioned the prolonged nature of the violence, suggesting that some officials in the government or administration might be prolonging the conflict for personal gain.
“This never-ending violence, running for over a year and a half, raises questions about the possibility that some officials in the government or administration are serving their interests by supporting this conflict and prolonging the tragedy,” he further said.
Highlighting the dire conditions in relief camps, Prof Engineer stressed the need for better facilities for the displaced and adequate compensation for the injured and families of the deceased.
He further remarked, “The condition of people in relief camps is pathetic. These camps must end with better facilities for the displaced. The injured should receive adequate compensation, alongside meaningful solutions for the families of the deceased. These steps are necessary to ease the pain of those hardest hit.”
In his statement, Prof Engineer also praised the peacemaking efforts of Manipur’s Pangal Muslim community, who have been actively involved in supporting victims from all communities.
“We also appreciate the initiatives of Manipur’s Pangal Muslim community for their peacemaking efforts and active work in supporting all Meitei and Kuki victims. Their work provides an embodiment of hope and togetherness during these challenging days,” he said.
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind urged all parties to exercise restraint and resolve the conflict through dialogue rather than violence.
Prof Engineer concluded, “Jamaat-e-Islami Hind urges everyone to exercise restraint and resolve issues through dialogue and discussions rather than violence. Peace, harmony, and mutual respect are the only ways to achieve a lasting resolution.”
