On Thursday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) released its first list of 11 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, which will likely take place in early 2025.
This announcement however marks the party’s initial steps toward preparing for the crucial polls, as it aims to retain its dominance in the national capital.
The list includes candidates for key constituencies across the city, including Chhatarpur, Kiradi, Vishwas Nagar, Rohtash Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Badarpur, Seelampur, Seemapuri, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar, and Matiala.
The finalization of the list came after a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the AAP, held at the residence of the party’s national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and party leader Gopal Rai, along with other senior leaders, attended the session.
As per the announcement, the following individuals will contest on the AAP ticket:
- Brahm Singh Tanwar for Chhatarpur
- Anil Jha for Kiradi
- Deepak Singla for Vishwas Nagar
- Sarita Singh for Rohtash Nagar
- BB Tyagi for Laxmi Nagar
- Ram Singh Netaji for Badarpur
- Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad for Seelampur
- Veer Singh Dhingan for Seemapuri
- Gaurav Sharma for Ghonda
- Manoj Tyagi for Karawal Nagar
- Sumesh Shokeen for Matiala
Notably, the list includes several prominent political figures who have switched allegiances.
BJP turncoats Brahm Singh Tanwar, Anil Jha, and BB Tyagi, along with Congress defectors Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad, Veer Singh Dhingan, and Sumesh Shokeen, were all handed tickets by the AAP.
These moves are however part of the party’s strategy to strengthen its position ahead of the elections.
However, the AAP also made some notable decisions by denying tickets to three sitting MLAs. Gulab Singh Yadav from Matiala, Rituraj Jha from Kiradi, and Abdul Rehman from Seelampur have been left out of the list, as the party looks to make strategic changes in its lineup.
Furthermore, Kartar Singh Tanwar, the AAP MLA from Chhatarpur who recently joined the BJP, was disqualified from his position.
The Delhi Assembly elections are likely to be held in early 2025, although the Election Commission has yet to announce the official dates.
AAP’s Landslide Victory In 2015 Delhi Assembly Elections
The last Assembly elections, held in February 2015, saw a massive victory for the AAP, which won 62 out of 70 seats, forming the government with Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured just 8 seats, while Congress failed to win any seats.
