Brazil defeated India 4-0 in their historic international football friendly at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced two impressive saves early in the contest but later endured a difficult evening as Brazil capitalised on his errors.
Estevao opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Gurpreet failed to hold the Brazilian attack at bay. The winger then created Brazil’s second goal, setting up Pedro in the 42nd minute.
The visitors entered half-time with a two-goal advantage despite India showing moments of attacking intent.
Brazil strengthened their position after the interval when substitute Samuel Lino struck in the 58th minute.
India continued to search for a breakthrough and came close when forward Ryan Williams saw his effort denied by a Brazilian goal-line clearance.
Lino completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, finding the net again in the 95th minute to seal Brazil’s 4-0 victory.
The scoreline did not fully reflect India’s efforts, as the hosts created several opportunities against the five-time FIFA World Cup champions.
India entered the fixture ranked 133 places below Brazil in the FIFA rankings, making the encounter a major test for the home side.
The match also marked the first senior international meeting between India and Brazil, giving the Kolkata crowd an opportunity to watch several Brazilian stars in action.
Despite the heavy defeat, India showed promising moments against one of football’s most decorated national teams and gained valuable experience from the high-profile contest.
