iPhone 17 Series To Receive Major Display Upgrades; But Some Tech Dropped To Keep Prices Low

Apple is set to introduce significant display improvements in the iPhone 17 series, particularly for the non-Pro variants.

However, new information reveals that while the company will equip these models with a 120Hz refresh rate OLED display, it will omit the ProMotion technology.

This move aims to keep prices competitive despite the upgrades.

Distribution Of Display Features Across Models

Earlier rumours suggested that Apple would extend the 120Hz ProMotion display—previously exclusive to the Pro models—to all iPhone 17 devices this year.

Yet, recent reports indicate that only the Pro models will retain the ProMotion feature.

Instead, the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Plus, and the iPhone 17 Air will receive a 120Hz OLED display without adaptive refresh rates.

The omission of ProMotion technology means that the adaptive refresh rate capability will be absent from the non-Pro models.

Consequently, features such as Always-On Display will likely remain exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max variants.

Without adaptive refresh, the screen will maintain a fixed 120Hz refresh rate instead of adjusting dynamically to the content, a feature common in LTPO panels on many Android devices.

Moreover, the fixed 120Hz refresh rate could negatively impact battery life on these models, as they cannot lower the refresh rate during less demanding tasks.

Balancing Cost And Performance

Apple appears to be balancing performance enhancements with cost efficiency.

By dropping ProMotion from the standard models, the company can maintain pricing close to current levels, which many users will appreciate.

After all, even a fixed 120Hz display represents a notable improvement over the older 60Hz panels found in previous models, especially for devices priced above Rs 80,000.

The iPhone 17 Air: Design And Durability Focus

Another point of interest is the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. This model is expected to feature a sleek design and incorporate some trade-offs to achieve that slim profile.

Rumour has it that Apple will use silicon-carbon technology for the battery, which should improve standby times.

Additionally, Apple will likely construct the frame from 7000 series aluminium alloy, providing a durable yet lightweight build.

Final Thoughts

While many hoped for ProMotion technology across all iPhone 17 models, these reports provide early insight into Apple’s strategy for balancing innovation with affordability.

We may still see surprises from Apple when the series launches, but for now, the display upgrades come with some compromises on adaptive refresh rate technology.
