Google CEO: AI To Boost Creativity, Not Cut Tech Jobs

Artificial intelligence–powered tools are rapidly evolving, as developers introduce a growing number of agentic systems to handle professional tasks.

These agents include OpenAI’s ‘Deep Research’ assistant and ‘Codex’ for software engineering, as well as Google’s latest offering, ‘Jules’, unveiled at the 2025 I/O conference.

These tools aim to enhance human efficiency and, in some cases, potentially replace human involvement in routine cognitive tasks.

The rapid adoption of such technologies has sparked concerns over job security in the white-collar workforce.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently warned that companies could eliminate up to 50% of entry-level white-collar roles within the next five years.

In contrast to these grim predictions, Google CEO Sundar Pichai struck a more optimistic tone in a recent podcast with AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman.

According to Pichai, about 30% of all code at Google is now written with the help of AI. However, instead of reducing the workforce, he sees this as an opportunity to expand.

“We plan to hire more engineers next year,” Pichai said, highlighting that AI tools have increased Google’s overall engineering velocity by approximately 10%.

He noted that while the company continues to refine how it measures such productivity, the early results are promising.

AI to enhance creativity, not eliminate it

Pichai emphasised that AI is helping developers move past tedious or repetitive tasks, enabling them to focus more on design, architecture, and creative problem-solving.

“There’s a lot of grunt work [in coding], and it hopefully takes a lot of that away,” he said. “It makes it even more fun to code and frees up time to create, problem-solve, and brainstorm with colleagues.”

He also noted that AI will democratise creativity by putting powerful coding tools into the hands of more people, potentially growing the pool of developers and innovators worldwide.

Pichai’s remarks suggest that Google views AI not as a replacement for engineers but as a catalyst for greater productivity and innovation.

While the future impact of AI on employment remains uncertain, companies like Google are currently focusing on how the technology can empower professionals, expand opportunity, and transform the nature of work itself.
