India Welcomes World’s Largest Container Ship At Vizhinjam Port

The world’s largest container ship, MSC IRINA, made its maiden call to South Asia on Monday as it docked at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala.

Operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), Vizhinjam has become the first port in the region to receive a vessel of this scale, marking a milestone in India’s maritime and logistics capabilities.

MSC IRINA, launched in March 2023 and flagged off on its first voyage a month later, holds the record for the highest TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity globally.

The vessel stretches 399.9 metres in length and 61.3 metres in width—nearly four times the length of a FIFA football field. It will remain berthed at Vizhinjam until Tuesday.

The ship’s arrival signals India’s growing presence in global shipping and reaffirms the strategic significance of the Vizhinjam port.

India’s first mega transhipment terminal

Adani Ports operates Vizhinjam International Seaport, India’s first mega transhipment container terminal.

This state-of-the-art, future-ready port sits near key international shipping routes and serves as the closest Indian port to the east-west shipping channel that connects Europe, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and the Far East.

Located just 10 nautical miles (about 19 kilometres) from this busy channel, Vizhinjam also offers ideal conditions for quick turnaround times and efficient cargo handling.

Adani Ports described the MSC IRINA’s visit as a ‘momentous occasion’ that highlights India’s potential as a leading logistics and maritime hub.

Global shipping giants are now including Indian ports in their itineraries, positioning the country to play a much larger role in international trade.

The development comes amid India’s continued investments in modernising its coastal infrastructure to reduce dependence on foreign ports for transhipment and boost domestic economic output.

Global shipping lines are expected to attend the event, which will boost the confidence of cargo operators, exporters, and importers alike.

By demonstrating the ability to host ultra-large container vessels, Vizhinjam sets a benchmark for Indian ports and solidifies its position as a critical link in global supply chains.

The successful docking of MSC IRINA marks not just a technical triumph but also a symbolic stride forward in India’s maritime ambition.
