Union Health Minister JP Nadda addressed the public that HMPV is not new. “The virus, first identified in 2001, spreads through respiration and affects all age groups.

Moreover, HMPV was first discovered in 2001 and is part of the Pneumoviridae family along with the Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

With the  Indian and Chinese governments assuring their respective countries of no serious threat, an outbreak of HMPV has raised the eyebrows of people globally. 

India has confirmed its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in an 8-month-old baby from Bengaluru, Karnataka.
