New Zealand ended day two of the second Test at 198/5, leading India by 301 runs and positioning themselves close to a historic series win at MCA Stadium. Mitchell Santner achieved career-best figures of 7-53, while Tom Latham’s crucial knock of 86 guided New Zealand to a commanding lead on Friday.
On a spin-friendly pitch, Santner’s precision dismantled India’s batting order. Santner varied his pace, line, and length to capture his first five-wicket haul in Tests. His 17.3 overs proved unplayable for India, with Glenn Phillips supporting him well, taking 2-26. Washington Sundar’s counterattack was brief, with India bowled out for 156 in 45.3 overs. Santner dismissed key Indian batters, capitalizing on rash shots, and dismissing Virat Kohli with a low full toss.
Starting with a lead of 103 runs, Latham played with intent, smashing ten boundaries in his 133-ball 86. Partnered with Tom Blundell, who remains unbeaten at 30, Latham guided New Zealand’s innings. After Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin claimed early wickets, New Zealand kept the scoreboard ticking. Sundar trapped Latham lbw on the sweep to end his knock, but Blundell and Glenn Phillips stabilized the innings, closing the day in a strong position.
New Zealand: 259 & 198/5 (Tom Latham 86, Tom Blundell 30 not out; Washington Sundar 4-56)
India: 156 all out (Ravindra Jadeja 38, Yashasvi Jaiswal 30; Mitchell Santner 7-53, Glenn Phillips 2-26)
