Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has lauded Rohit Sharma’s determined 73-run innings in the second ODI against Australia, calling it a performance that would bring the opener ‘immense personal satisfaction’ despite India falling short in Adelaide on Thursday.
After a disappointing eight-run outing in the series opener at Perth, Rohit faced heavy criticism. However, the veteran responded in style, anchoring India’s innings alongside Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 61 runs, to guide the visitors to 264/9 in 50 overs.
Though the total wasn’t enough to secure victory, Australia chased it down in 46.2 overs to seal a 2-0 series lead, Rohit’s knock stood out for its grit and application under pressure.
Speaking on JioStar’s Cricket Live, Nayar said such innings often stay etched in a player’s memory.
“As a player, you may forget your hundreds, but not the ones where you’ve had to fight for every run,” he noted. “Rohit might not recall this innings for its numbers, but he’ll cherish the effort. It was about character, scoring runs in tough conditions brings a special joy, much like a bowler taking wickets on a flat pitch.”
Nayar added that Rohit’s determination reflected the team’s overall mindset.
“Even when Australia seemed in control, India kept fighting. Rohit’s intent, combined with his resilience, defined that spirit.”
Kuldeep Yadav Set for Return in Final ODI, Says Parthiv Patel
Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel suggested India would likely include spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the XI for the third and final ODI in Sydney.
“We’ll definitely see Kuldeep playing the next game,” Patel said. “India should trust their top order and not overload the line-up with batters. Kuldeep’s ability to pick wickets in the middle overs could be crucial.”
Patel added humorously that captain Shubman Gill should ‘practise the coin toss’ en route to Sydney, acknowledging how pivotal conditions have been in both matches.
Despite Australia’s series win, Patel praised India’s effort, highlighting the team’s resilience amid limited preparation time.
