On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring dignity, access, and opportunity for Divyang citizens.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 1992.
The day promotes awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities and their full inclusion in all aspects of society.

He praised the creativity and determination of Divyang individuals, noting that they have excelled across multiple sectors and significantly enriched India’s national progress.
PM Modi highlighted the government’s sustained efforts over the years. He said the government has built accessible infrastructure and implemented inclusive education policies.
PM Modi added that authorities have enforced laws protecting Divyang rights and developed innovations in assistive technologies.
He affirmed that the government will continue to build on these initiatives to further empower Divyang citizens in the years ahead.
Dignity, Access & Opportunity
On the same day, President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for 2025 in New Delhi.
At the event, the President emphasised that Divyang citizens deserve equality. She added that all stakeholders share the responsibility to ensure their participation in the nation’s developmental journey.
She stated, “A society can be considered truly developed only with the equal participation of Divyangjan.”
President Murmu highlighted the theme of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025: “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”
She noted that the theme emphasises the importance of inclusion in society. President Murmu added that it reflects a progressive vision of social development.

Both the Prime Minister and President underlined that disability inclusion is not a matter of charity, but a fundamental right and essential for national growth.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities continues to serve as a global platform to raise awareness and mobilise support. It also celebrates the achievements of persons with disabilities worldwide.
In India, the observance reinforces the government’s initiatives to create inclusive societies and provide accessible infrastructure.
It also enables Divyang citizens to participate equally in education, employment, and public life.
India is implementing policy interventions, technological innovations, and social awareness campaigns to support Divyang citizens.
These initiatives aim to create an environment where they can thrive and contribute meaningfully.
The government ensures that Divyang citizens can fully participate in the country’s development journey.
