26-year-old javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra took to social media to reflect on his 2024 season following his second-place finish at the Diamond League Final in Brussels. Chopra, who competed despite a fractured fourth metacarpal in his left hand, shared his thoughts on the year’s challenges and learning experiences.
Season Recap and Injury Disclosure
Chopra, the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, finished second in Brussels with a throw of 87.86 meters. He missed the top spot by just 1 centimeter. Anderson Peters, who claimed first place, threw 87.87 meters and won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
In his social media post, Chopra revealed that he injured himself in practice on Monday and later discovered the fracture through an X-ray. Despite the injury, he was determined to compete in Brussels. Chopra wrote, “This was another painful challenge for me. But with the help of my team, I was able to participate in Brussels.”
Reflection on the 2024 Campaign
The Diamond League Final marked the end of Chopra’s 2024 season, which also included a second-place finish at the Paris Olympics. He previously secured second place at the Doha Diamond League and Lausanne Diamond League this year.
Chopra expressed disappointment over not meeting his own expectations but highlighted the growth he experienced. He concluded his post with gratitude towards his supporters, stating, “2024 has made me a better athlete and person. See you in 2025.” He is now focused on returning fully fit for the upcoming season.
