Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra created a sensation on Friday at the highly anticipated World Athletics Championship 2023 held in Budapest, Hungary. Neeraj Chopra secured his qualification for the men’s javelin throw final competition, which is scheduled for Sunday. Among the top contenders, Neeraj will be one of the frontrunners in the final. The qualifying mark for securing a spot in the javelin throw final event was 83 meters. Neeraj, whose personal record stands at 88.67 meters, easily surpassed this mark. Interestingly, Neeraj Chopra and Anju Bobby George (2003, silver) are the only two Indians to have won medals at the World Athletics Championship. Neeraj’s season-best throw of 88.77 meters secured him the top position in Qualifying Group A, and he has already qualified for this Sunday’s final.
No Competitor Can Match Neeraj’s Form
If Chopra wins gold, he will become only the second Indian, after sharpshooter Abhinav Bindra, to clinch gold medals in both individual Olympic and World Championship events. In 2008, Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold, had also secured a podium finish at the 2006 Zagreb World Championship in the 10-meter air rifle event. Neeraj is currently in remarkable form, and no athlete seems capable of challenging his supremacy at the championship.
Neeraj’s Throw of 88.77 Meters
Neeraj Chopra kicked off his campaign at the Budapest (Hungary) World Athletics Championship 2023 on Friday with a throw of 88.77 meters. The Indian star athlete dominated Group A and secured a confirmed qualification spot. Meanwhile, no one else in his group managed to achieve the qualification mark of 83.00 meters. Germany’s Julian Weber secured second place with a best throw of 82.39 meters, while India’s D.P. Manu held third place with a best throw of 81.31 meters. Manu’s qualification is still uncertain as it depends on the results of Group B, where Keshorn Walcott will compete. The 37 javelin throwers have been divided into Groups A and B.
