Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has sharply criticised the decision to schedule the high-voltage India-Pakistan match in the upcoming Asia Cup, set for 14 September.
He believes the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) would not have proceeded without a clear signal from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
This statement comes on the heels of controversy surrounding India’s recent withdrawal from a clash with Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends.
That decision, taken by former Indian cricketers, had sparked speculation that India might avoid Pakistan in upcoming tournaments as well.
Kaneria, speaking to IANS, said the recent online meeting between ACC chief and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi and BCCI officials likely paved the way for the September 14 fixture.
“The ACC must have received a green signal from the BCCI, which is why the match was scheduled,” he claimed.
While acknowledging that fans eagerly await such contests, Kaneria questioned the timing and consistency of the BCCI’s stance.
“One day, there’s a boycott in the name of patriotism, the next there’s a marquee fixture announced. Either separate politics from sports entirely or stick to one clear line,” he urged.
The former spinner argued that the BCCI should have taken more time before confirming such a sensitive fixture.
“You can’t keep changing your stand every few weeks. If the leadership believes in separating cricket from politics, they should say so and follow it. But if patriotism is the deciding factor, then stand firm,” he said.
Kaneria also warned of the confusion and criticism that might unfold in the run-up to the match, particularly given the recent boycott incident. “Hype will build, questions will arise, and the credibility of earlier decisions will be tested,” he added.
Highlighting India’s influence in the global cricketing economy, Kaneria said the absence of India from any major tournament disrupts everything, from sponsorships to TV rights.
“India generates almost 99 per cent of cricket’s revenue. Major teams want to play them because their players feature in the IPL,” he stated.
He explained that broadcasters and advertisers rely heavily on India-Pakistan matches, which draw record-breaking viewership.
“When India steps back, the value of the event drops dramatically,” he said.
Kaneria concluded by urging the BCCI to adopt a more transparent approach.
“When you’re in a position of power, clarity matters. Either cricket is separate from politics, or it’s not. But consistency is non-negotiable. Once you take a decision, stick to it,” he said.
