Veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has advised young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to adopt a more patient approach while batting in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Pujara believes Jaiswal is rushing his shots and needs to spend more time settling at the crease.
Jaiswal has scored 193 runs in three Tests so far, with 161 of them coming in a brilliant second-innings knock during India’s victory in Perth. However, his recent performances have dipped, with scores of 0, 24, 4, and 4 not out.
Pujara noted that Jaiswal’s eagerness to score quickly is affecting his game. “He seems in a hurry to score runs and get a quick start. As an opener in Test cricket, you should play deliveries on merit, especially in the first 5-10 overs. Even aggressive players like Virender Sehwag waited for the right ball to hit,” Pujara said on Star Sports.
The veteran batter urged Jaiswal to avoid driving balls that are not pitched up and to focus on playing shots only when fully confident.
Learning from KL Rahul’s Approach
Pujara also pointed out that Jaiswal has struggled against left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, who has dismissed him four times in the series. He recommended the youngster take inspiration from KL Rahul’s ability to capitalize on fuller deliveries.
“If Jaiswal can show confidence in his defense, bowlers will start pitching the ball up, creating opportunities for him to play his drives. KL Rahul is playing overpitched deliveries well, and Jaiswal should aim to do the same,” Pujara added.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is tied at 1-1. The decisive Boxing Day Test will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday.
