Man rescued from marshy area in Thane
A 38-year-old man was rescued on Sunday after he got trapped in a marshy area behind a housing society in the Ghodbunder Road area of Thane, a civic official said. Shabir Sheikh got trapped in the area at around 1:30pm, said Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi. "After we were alerted, personnel from the RDMC and fire brigade rescued him. He did not sustain any injuries," he added.

CM Siddaramaiah announces Rs 50 lakh grant for Chitrakala Parishad
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday announced a grant of Rs 50 lakh for Chitrakala Parishad saying the government is committed to the development of art. Speaking after inaugurating the 21st 'Chitra Santhe' (Art Fair-2024) organised by the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad here, Siddaramaiah said the state government would provide the necessary assistance to establish museums and art galleries in all districts. The chief minister expressed pleasure over dedicating 'Chitra Santhe' to space scientists of India who made the country proud with their landmark achievements. According to the organisers, about 1,600 artists from 22 states participate in Chitra Sante and three lakh to four lakh people visit to see the annual art fair.
Five Maoists arrested in Jharkhand’s Chatra
Five Maoists were arrested in Jharkhand's Chatra district, police said on Sunday. Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan said a 'sub-zonal commander' was among the five people belonging to Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee, a splinter group, arrested from the Tandwa police station area on Saturday evening. The 'commander', identified as Adesh Kumar Ganjhu alias 'Prabhakar Ji', was wanted in several cases of arson and extortion in the Tandwa coalfield area, he said. The other four were identified as Upendra Kumar Ganjhu alias Bhola, Laldev Kumar Ganjhu, Pintu Kumar Ganjhu and Rajesh Kumar Ganjhu. Arms and ammunition were also seized from them. Among these were a rifle, two pistols, 14 live cartridges, a knife and pamphlets of the banned organisation, the SP said.
‘Kalash’ from Ayodhya installed at Ram Temple on Martand Sun Temple premises in J-K
A 'kalash' from Ayodhya was on Sunday installed at the Ram Temple on the premises of the famous Sun Temple in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. The 'kalash', one of those sent to select Ram temples, was installed by the local people in the presence of devotees from Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. "We expressed our gratitude to the people of the country for this honour and pray that peace and harmony prevails in Kashmir," one of the local devotees said after installing the 'kalash' in the Ram Temple. Special pooja was performed at the time of installation of the 'kalash' as devotees paid obeisance at the temple. The eighth-century Martand Temple is one of the oldest sun temples in India.
Delhi police nab two members of Neeraj Bawana-Naveen Bali gang
The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested two members of the Neeraj Bawana-Naveen Bali gang, officials said on Sunday. The arrested duo -- Subeg Singh and Saurabh -- both aged 32 years, were wanted in cases of attempt to murder, robbery, theft and Arms Act in Delhi, said Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) HGS Dhaliwal. The Special Cell has been working to track down and nab the members of the Neeraj Bawana-Naveen Bali gang, Dhaliwal said. On January 3, a tip-off was received that two wanted criminals of the gang would come to the Munirka area here to meet their associates, following which a team was formed to apprehend the duo and a trap was laid, he said. "During interrogation, the accused told the police that there has been a long-standing rivalry between the Kapil Panwar and Neeraj Bawana gangs to establish supremacy in the South Delhi area," the police officer added.
Three additional individuals arrested for drug distribution at Thane’s rave gathering
Thane crime branch has arrested three more persons for allegedly supplying drugs at the New Year's Eve rave party, which was busted by the police, taking the number of arrests so far to five, a senior official said on Saturday. A large quantity of drugs was allegedly seized at the party held in the Kasarwadavli area of the city. "Police arrested Pratamesh Ingle (25), Aryan Shelar (19), and Krishnadev Mishra (25) for allegedly supplying LSD blots for the party," the official said. Police had arrested Tejas Kubal (23) and Sujal Mahadik (19) earlier. Police are trying to unravel the network involved in organizing and supplying substances for the rave party, he said, adding that the investigation is underway
HP woman was found hanging in a room in Mathura
A 26-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh, working here at an engineering college, reportedly hanged herself in her room, police said on Saturday. Shalini Mahajan, a resident of village Dehra in Bilaspur district had come to Mathura in search of a job on December 20 last year and found one at a local engineering college a few days ago, Station House Officer (SHO) of Kotwali police station Ravi Tyagi said. She had to take charge on Saturday, but when she did not reach college on time, the college administration tried to contact her, he said. The SHO said that the college staff tracked the place where Mahajan was staying and when they found her room locked from inside, they informed police. "We broke the door and saw the woman hanging from the ceiling fan with a noose made of a piece of cloth," said the SHO. The officer said Mahajan's body had been sent for post-mortem examination.
Faridabad schoolboy booked for harassing girl student
A schoolboy has been booked for allegedly harassing a girl student and sharing her "objectionable" photos and videos on the internet, the Faridabad police said on Saturday. When contacted, the principal of the private school in Faridabad said the accused has been removed from the institution. According to the police, the 16-year-old girl, a student of class 11, lodged a complaint alleging that the schoolboy forcibly took "objectionable" pictures and videos of her and then started blackmailing her. And, when the girl stopped responding to his calls, the boy sent the pictures and videos to her mother. After a complaint was lodged with the school authorities, the accused circulated the photos and videos on the internet, the police said, citing the complaint. An FIR was registered at Adarsh Nagar police station on Friday. The accused student, who is reportedly on the run, will be nabbed soon, Adarsh Nagar police station SHO Sanjay Kumar said.
Man held for `raping’ junior colleague
A 36-year-old man from Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a junior woman colleague, an official said. Based on the complaint filed by the 23-year-old survivor, a case was registered against the accused (name not disclosed) under Indian Penal Code section 376 (rape) at Kharghar police station on Friday. The accused took her to his residence on September 29 last year on the pretext of some work and allegedly raped her, the police official said. He also threatened to make her photos with him public, the woman said in the complaint. Before approaching police, she had tried to end her life by taking sleeping pills and also slit her wrist with a blade once, the First Information Report stated. Further probe is on, the official said.
