Election Commission Estimates An Amount Of Rs. 10,000 Crore Every 15 Years To Procure New EVMs

Election Commission has estimated that an amount of Rs 10,000 crore would be required every 15 years to procure new Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) if simultaneous polls are conducted for Lok Sabha and assemblies. In a communication sent to the law ministry, the poll panel highlighted that the shelf life of EVMs is 15 years and one set of machines could be used for three cycles of elections in their lifespan if simultaneous polls were held. For the upcoming Lok Sabha polls this year, it is estimated that a total of 11.80 lakh polling stations would be required across India.
