AI Trained On Text Data May Alter Social Scientific Research

A group of scientists thinks that large language models (LLMs), in particular, will revolutionize social science research.

They contend that LLMs trained on massive volumes of text data can replicate human responses to support thorough and quick examinations of human behavior. These developments might significantly alter conventional social science data collection techniques.

Researchers, on the other hand, warn of potential hazards, such as AI’s failure to replicate socio-cultural biases and the necessity for open-source, transparent AI models to ensure research equity and quality.

LLMs have already proved the ability to generate genuine survey responses in sectors such as consumer behavior, thus they might potentially replace human participants for data collecting.

The use of AI in social sciences opens up new avenues for generating ideas that can then be tested in human populations.

While LLMs have enormous promise, they frequently exclude socio-cultural biases found in real human populations, posing a huge difficulty for academics investigating these biases.

Top researchers from the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania look at how AI (large language models, or LLMs, in particular) could change the nature of their work in an article published yesterday in the prominent journal Science.

Professor of Psychology at Waterloo, Igor Grossmann said, “What we wanted to explore in this article is how social science research practices can be adapted, even reinvented, to harness the power of AI”.

While perspectives on the viability of this application of powerful AI systems differ, studies with simulated participants might be used to create innovative hypotheses that could later be tested in human populations.

However, the researchers warn of certain potential problems in this technique, such as the fact that LLMs are frequently trained to eliminate socio-cultural biases that occur in real-life humans. This means that sociologists utilizing AI in this manner would be unable to investigate those biases.
