Many people confuse heart attacks with cardiac arrests, but a Mumbai-based surgeon says understanding the difference can save lives. Dr Manan Vora, orthopaedic surgeon and co-founder of NutriByte Wellness, explained the distinction in an Instagram video posted on October 27.
Dr Vora likened the heart to a house and blood flow to the plumbing system. “A heart attack is like a blocked pipe,” he said. Blood cannot reach parts of the heart due to a blockage in the vessels, causing symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, and nausea. Importantly, the patient usually remains conscious and responsive.
In contrast, Dr Vora compared cardiac arrest to a sudden electrical failure in a house. “In a cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating abruptly, and blood circulation halts completely. The person collapses instantly and requires immediate CPR or a defibrillator,” he warned.
He stressed that cardiac arrest is far more urgent than a heart attack because every second counts. “Quick action can make the difference between life and death,” he said.
Dr Vora also shared practical advice for emergencies. During a heart attack, he recommended calling an ambulance immediately while monitoring the patient. However, if someone collapses suddenly and stops breathing, it is a cardiac arrest. “Start CPR immediately and use a defibrillator if available,” he urged.
He highlighted that while heart attacks give some warning signs, cardiac arrests strike without notice. Understanding the distinction allows bystanders to respond appropriately, potentially saving lives.
Dr Vora’s explanation provides a clear visual: a blocked pipe represents restricted blood flow, whereas an electrical failure illustrates sudden cardiac shutdown. By recognising these differences, people can react effectively during heart-related emergencies and improve outcomes for victims.
