How To Protect Children From Heat Stroke & Dehydration

As India faces an intense summer season, with heatwaves affecting states like Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, children are at heightened risk of heat-related illnesses.

Heat stroke and dehydration can occur rapidly in young ones, making prevention crucial.

Here are essential steps parents and guardians can take to protect children from rising temperatures.

Hydration Is Key

Children may not always express when they’re thirsty. Parents should ensure they drink water frequently, even if they don’t ask.

Offer water every 30-60 minutes, especially if children are playing outdoors.

Avoid sugary drinks and caffeinated beverages, which can worsen dehydration.

Coconut water, fresh fruit juices, and ORS (oral rehydration solution) are excellent choices to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes.

Dress For The Weather

Light, loose-fitting cotton clothing is ideal for children in hot weather.

Choose light colours that reflect sunlight and help keep the body cool.

Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas add extra protection during outings.

Always apply a child-safe sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when stepping out.

Avoid The Hottest Hours

The sun is strongest between 11 AM and 4 PM Children should ideally stay indoors during these hours.

Schedule outdoor playtimes for early morning or evening.

If outings are necessary, ensure shade is available and limit physical activity to prevent overheating.

Know The Warning Signs

Early signs of heat exhaustion in children include excessive sweating, tiredness, dizziness, and muscle cramps.

Dehydration may show as dry mouth, irritability, sunken eyes, and reduced urination.

If a child’s body temperature rises rapidly and they stop sweating, it could signal heat stroke- a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

Create A Cool Environment

Ensure your home is well-ventilated. Use fans, curtains, and air conditioning where available.

Keep cold towels or ice packs ready, and encourage rest in shaded or cool areas.

Avoid car journeys during peak heat, and never leave a child unattended in a parked vehicle.

Nutrition Matters

Include hydrating fruits like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and berries in your child’s meals.

Soups, curd, and salads are also helpful in maintaining hydration levels.

Avoid oily and spicy food that can raise body temperature.

Preventing heat stroke and dehydration in children requires constant attention during summer.

With timely precautions and a focus on hydration and shade, parents can ensure their children remain safe and healthy through the hottest months of the year.
