How To Choose The Right Moisturiser For Oily, Dry & Sensitive Skin

Choosing the right moisturiser is essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. However, every skin type has different needs. The wrong product can leave your face greasy, dry or irritated. Understanding your skin type and selecting suitable ingredients can help you build an effective skincare routine.

Moisturisers strengthen the skin barrier, prevent moisture loss and protect against external irritants. Ingredients play an important role in these benefits. Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid attract water, while emollients soften rough skin. Occlusives, including petrolatum and dimethicone, help prevent moisture loss. Ceramides further support the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Choose According to Your Skin Type

People with dry skin should opt for richer creams containing ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid to reduce tightness and flakiness.

Those with oily skin should choose lightweight, water-based or gel moisturisers. Oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas provide hydration without making the skin greasy.

Combination skin benefits from lightweight lotions across the face, with richer creams applied to particularly dry areas.

For sensitive skin, fragrance-free products with simple ingredient lists can help minimise irritation and support the skin barrier. People with normal skin can generally use lightweight lotions or creams.

Apply Moisturiser the Right Way

Apply moisturiser within three minutes of washing your face or bathing, while your skin is slightly damp. This helps retain hydration. Applying it twice daily can further prevent dryness.

Adjust Your Routine With the Seasons

During summer, lightweight gels and lotions can prevent excessive greasiness. In winter, richer creams help protect against dryness caused by cold temperatures and low humidity.

Choosing a moisturiser that suits your skin type and seasonal needs can help maintain a healthy, balanced complexion.
