Report – Rajiv Tiwari, New Delhi
A healthy lifestyle requires a balanced diet, regular exercise and quality sleep. Highlighting the importance of sleep environment and daily habits, a book titled ‘Designing Sleep’ was launched in New Delhi.
Software designer Joseph Zakhar authored the book, which BW Businessworld Editor-in-Chief Anurag Batra launched at IIC Annexe.
Dr Shashi Dubey, founder of The Indian School of Natural Spiritual Sciences, and several other guests attended the event.
The book explains how bedroom design, daily routines and mental well-being influence sleep quality and overall health.
Zakhar said his personal experience inspired him to write the book. Around seven years ago, his mother fell ill, prompting him to understand how sleep-related problems affect health. He subsequently began researching sleep and explored ways to improve it from a designer’s perspective.
Zakhar explained that good sleep requires more than simply going to bed on time. Bedroom layouts, windows, doors, lighting, bedding and even clothing colours can influence the sleeping environment. He further advised people to avoid mobile phones and television before bedtime and reduce mental stress.
Dr Shashi Dubey highlighted the importance of maintaining a consistent routine and positive thinking. She advised people to calm their minds before sleeping instead of worrying about the following day. She further recommended fixed sleeping and waking hours, adequate rest, light-coloured clothing and waking up early.
The book examines how changing lifestyles affect sleep patterns, particularly among young people.
Late-night mobile phone use, social activities, gym schedules and work commitments often leave them with insufficient time to rest.
Through seven different aspects of sleep design, Zakhar explores how people can improve their sleeping habits and surroundings to achieve better rest.
The book highlights that quality sleep forms an essential foundation for healthy living. It encourages readers to plan their sleep routines as carefully as their daily activities and create an environment that supports restful nights.
