In today’s digital world, children are increasingly spending more time on screens, whether it’s for gaming, social media, or other digital activities. While technology is an essential part of modern life, excessive screen time is raising concerns among parents about its potential negative impact on their children’s mental and physical health, including reduced physical activity, poorer sleep, and social isolation. As a result, many parents are struggling to manage their child’s screen time in a way that promotes a healthy balance.
Experts suggest that rather than cutting out screen time entirely, a balanced approach is more practical and effective. Technology is unavoidable, and the key is teaching children how to use it mindfully. Encouraging a mix of screen time along with other enriching activities—like outdoor play, hobbies, and spending time with friends and family—can help children maintain a healthy lifestyle while embracing technology.
Prakriti Poddar, a certified counselor and a Transpersonal Regression therapist, advises against traditional parenting tactics like taking devices away suddenly, which can cause frustration and withdrawal. Instead, she recommends gradual transitions. For instance, parents can let children choose their “stopping point” for screen activities, like “Would you like to stop in 2 minutes or 5 minutes?” This approach allows children to feel in control and reduces resistance.
The “screen time bank” system encourages children to earn their screen time by engaging in real-world activities. For example, spending 30 minutes playing outside could equal 30 minutes of screen time. This method helps children see their time as something they actively manage, rather than something that is just given or taken away. It encourages balance and accountability.
When it’s time to transition away from screens, children can often become upset. Poddar suggests using co-regulation techniques to help calm them down. Parents can sit next to their children, breathe deeply, and guide them to take deep breaths together. This method helps children regulate their emotions before a power struggle begins and smoothens the transition away from devices.
The ultimate goal is to help children develop healthy relationships with technology. Instead of treating screens as enemies, parents should focus on integrating screen time with other important aspects of life. By maintaining a balance between tech use and other activities, parents can help their children learn how to engage with technology responsibly while preserving their well-being.
