The Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department has successfully restored the Ganga river’s flow into a single, seamless stream at the Sangam. This significant initiative was undertaken to enhance bathing facilities for the millions of devotees expected to attend the Mahakumbh-2025.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, this ambitious project reversed changes to the Ganga’s course between Shastri Bridge and Sangam Nose. Over time, the river had split into three streams, impacting its purity and limiting the fair area. This division also made it difficult to organize facilities for pilgrims. By merging the streams, the department has restored the river’s original flow, creating a cohesive and sacred bathing experience for devotees.
Advanced Techniques Ensure Success Amid Challenges
To execute the project, the Irrigation Department sought technical expertise from IIT Guwahati. Based on their survey, three massive dredging machines were deployed to streamline and merge the Ganga’s split streams. The swift river current and high water levels posed significant challenges during the process.
Dredging operations were carried out round the clock in three shifts. Stabilizing the heavy dredgers proved difficult due to the powerful current, which repeatedly displaced the machines and bent discharge pipes. The team employed large anchors, pontoon bridges, and thick ropes to stabilize the equipment. Acting on Chief Minister Adityanath’s advice, a fourth dredger was deployed, which accelerated the progress and ensured the success of the operation.
Spacious Sangam Area Prepares for 40 Crore Devotees
The restoration of the Ganga to a single stream has transformed the Sangam area into a more organized and spacious zone for pilgrims. Approximately 22 hectares of additional space have been created to accommodate millions of devotees bathing at a central location. To prepare the expanded fairground, five lakh metric tonnes of sand were arranged, ensuring a smooth and accessible area for the Mahakumbh.
This restoration not only enhances the sacred experience for devotees but also facilitates better management of the grand event. The project symbolizes a return to the river’s pristine form and blends technological expertise with determination to uphold tradition. The effort is expected to provide a grander and more efficient Mahakumbh-2025 for all pilgrims.
