Telecom Minister requests, “Never Pick Calls…” As WhatsApp Spam Calls Surge

Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishanaw made a request of not picking up any unknown call to mobile users. He told reporters, “People should never pick calls made from unknown numbers. I request every citizen that they should respond to calls from only (telephone/mobile) those numbers they recognize” while addressing to a question regarding spam calls. He also added that people should only receive the phone call if callers sends an identification message.

Several steps taken to reduce spam calls

Vaishnaw informed that the ministry has taken several steps to reduce spam calls and cyber crime. He also told  about a recently launched portal called ‘Sanchar Saathi’ which prevents spam and cyber frauds. Over 40 lakh wrong SIMs and 41,000 wrong “points of sale” agents were blacklisted.

Sudden surge in spam calls

Particularly, on WhatsApp sudden surge in spam calls has been witnessed in the last few months. A massive increase in international spam calls on the social media platforms have been reported including voice and video calls. WhatsApp blocked nearly 36 lakh mobile connections to check scam calls fraud.

WhatsApp ramping up its AI

WhatsApp has increased the level of its artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine learning systems to reduce the fake calls. A spokesperson from Company said, “Our new enforcement will reduce the current calling rate by at least 50 per cent and we expect to be able to control the current incidence effectively. We will continue to work relentlessly towards ensuring a safe experience for our users.”
