The Supreme Court decided on Wednesday to hear on May 12 a petition by the producers of the controversial multilingual film ‘The Kerala Story’ challenging the West Bengal government’s ban on screening of the movie after the creator stated that they are “losing money every day”.

Senior advocate Harish Salve moved for an urgent hearing before a bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha.

According to Salve, the appeal challenges the West Bengal government’s ban as well as the ‘de facto’ ban in Tamil Nadu.

The bench stated on Tuesday that it had scheduled a separate hearing on May 15 for a second appeal against the Kerala High Court’s refusal to suspend the release of the film and that the new appeal will also be considered on that day.

However, after Salve said, “We are losing money every day”, the bench agreed to set the plea for hearing on May 12.

On May 5, ‘The Kerala Story’ starring Adah Sharma was released in theatres.
