Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Lokbandhu Shri Raj Narayan Combined Hospital in Lucknow on Friday after four children, including two girls, tragically died due to food poisoning at a government-run shelter home.
The shelter, Nirvana Rajkiya Bal Grah, houses 142 children, and the incident has raised serious concerns about the facility’s conditions.
During his visit, CM Adityanath took stock of the situation and assured the public that the children receiving treatment at the hospital would receive the best care.
The Chief Minister personally inquired about the children’s condition and gathered information about their treatment from doctors.
In a post on X, CM Yogi said, “Today, I met the children affected by food poisoning at Lokbandhu Shri Raj Narayan Combined Hospital, Lucknow. I enquired about their well-being and obtained information from doctors regarding their treatment.”
He further emphasized that the well-being of the children was his top priority and expressed his hope for their recovery, saying, “May all the children get well soon; this is my prayer to Lord Shri Ram.”
The food poisoning incident began on March 20, when several children started showing symptoms of illness.
By the time of the visit, medical staff had hospitalized 23 children, and their conditions had worsened over time.
Tragically, four children succumbed to the effects of the food poisoning.
The shelter home houses children who require dedicated care, and reports indicate that many of the affected children have mental challenges.
Officials have raised concerns about whether adequate supervision and care were provided at the facility.
Dr. Rajiv Dixit, Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) at Lokbandhu Hospital, explained that many of the children presented with symptoms such as anemia and dehydration.
He confirmed that the medical team had carried out necessary investigations, including X-rays and blood tests, to assess the children’s condition.
Dr NB Singh, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), also noted that many children displayed signs of vomiting and diarrhoea.
While the exact cause of the illness remains unclear, he suggested that severe dehydration might have contributed to the situation.
Following the incident, the District Magistrate has ordered an immediate inquiry to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning.
Authorities are closely examining the food provided at the shelter and the overall living conditions at the facility.
The inquiry will aim to identify any lapses in food safety and care at the shelter home.
Dr. Dixit raised concerns about the supervision at the shelter, particularly regarding children who may have been neglected or inadequately cared for.
“It is likely that these children had caretakers, but we need to assess whether proper supervision was in place,” he added.
As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on ensuring that such incidents do not occur again in the future and are taking steps to improve safety measures in government-run shelters.
