On Friday, March 28, 2025, at 12:02:07 PM IST, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangkok, Thailand, sending shockwaves across the city.
According to Germany’s GFZ Center for Geosciences, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located in Myanmar, near the city of Monywa, around 50 kilometers from the epicenter.
The earthquake caused noticeable shaking in the greater Bangkok area, home to more than 17 million people.
Startled residents quickly evacuated high-rise buildings, seeking refuge in the streets and away from the possibility of aftershocks.
The tremors were strong enough to cause water to slosh out of swimming pools located in tall skyscrapers.
At least 20 people have died after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, followed by a powerful 6.8 aftershock.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in central Myanmar, a region already affected by ongoing civil unrest.
As the earthquake struck during a period of political instability, there is currently no confirmed information on the quake’s effects within Myanmar.
The country’s ongoing civil conflict may complicate potential relief and recovery efforts.
Given the proximity of the epicenter to both Bangkok and Myanmar, authorities in both regions are monitoring the situation closely.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared for possible aftershocks in the coming hours as the situation develops.
