If you love tomatoes in your Happy Meal then there is bad news for you. McDonald’s has decided to drop tomatoes from their burgers and wraps in multiple parts of the nation. There is a shortage of supply in tomatoes and concerns of quality, the food chain said.

Public making fun of McDonald’s Burgers And Wraps

SEBI Registered Investment Adviser, Aditya Saha tweeted that McDonald’s in Delhi had put up a notice stating that even McDonald’s cannot afford tomatoes now.

Many people on social media had sarcastic responses to this. One individual claimed on Twitter that the situation is problematic because of the supply-demand disparity. Because they run on fixed rates for the full year, restaurants and QSR chains often do not take pricing variations into account.

The cry of ‘Tomato price’

The government attributes the higher pricing of tomatoes to a season of low output during which monsoon rains interfere with transportation and distribution, but customers have recently faced higher prices for a variety of goods, from milk to spices.

In the northern regions, tomato prices have dramatically increased, reaching 250 rupees per kilogramme in Gangotri Dham and 180–200 rupees per kilogramme in Uttarkashi district. Local vegetable vendors have observed how tomato prices have suddenly risen, which has reduced consumer demand. Tomatoes are now being sold at between 200 and 250 rupees per kilogramme in Gangotri and Yamunotri, where similar price increases have also been seen.

A vegetable seller said the importance of tomatoes has increased in the region all of a sudden. He said, “Consumers are bearing the brunt of the rising prices of the tomatoes in Uttarkashi. People are not even willing to buy them. In Gangotri, Yamunotri, tomatoes are going at ₹200 to ₹250 per kg.”
