The cheetah population at Kuno National Park has risen to 38 after South African female cheetah Gamini gave birth to three cubs on Wednesday. The development marks the ninth successful cheetah birth in India since the launch of Project Cheetah on September 17, 2022. Of the total population, 27 are Indian-born cubs.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared the update on social media, describing Madhya Pradesh as a powerful hub for cheetah reintroduction.
Mohan Yadav said it was a matter of great joy that Gamini, imported from South Africa under Project Cheetah, had delivered three cubs, calling it the ninth successful birth since the cheetahs arrived at Kuno. He described the development as historic and said it strengthened India’s efforts in wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection and ecological balance.

Bhupender Yadav termed the birth a powerful symbol of India’s determined conservation mission. He said it was a moment of pride for Kuno and the nation, expressing hope that Gamini and her cubs would grow strong and carry forward India’s cheetah revival story.
He added that each successful birth reinforces the foundation of Project Cheetah and reflects the round-the-clock dedication of field staff and veterinary teams at the park.
Global Collaboration Continues
Gamini was translocated from South Africa as part of the ambitious programme to restore the population of the world’s fastest land animal in India. Earlier this month, Aasha, a cheetah brought from Namibia, delivered five cubs at Kuno.
The development comes ahead of the scheduled arrival of a third batch of eight cheetahs from Botswana on February 28. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dedicated Project Cheetah to the nation, and the initiative continues to attract global attention as a major ecological restoration effort.
