‘Things Were Not Working Well’: Nitish Kumar States Reason Behind Resignation

Noting that “things were not working well” for him in the Mahagathbandhan, which he had joined less than 18 months ago, and the opposition alliance INDIA, JD(U) president Nitish Kumar resigned as Bihar’s chief minister on Sunday.

Speaking to media here following his resignation from Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Kumar—who is expected to form a new government with BJP’s backing said, “You will get to know what happens next if the parties which were with me earlier agree to come together.”

“I have submitted my resignation to the Governor. The government that was in place now comes to an end. I have let it go”, said Kumar, who stopped briefly to talk to reporters outside the Raj Bhavan, which is a stone’s throw from his official residence.

The 72-year-old leader expressed dissatisfaction with the status of affairs in the Mahagathbandhan and the INDIA bloc, which he assisted in shaping but which did not sufficiently acknowledge his contributions.

“You all know how I came to this alliance and also how I worked to bring together so many parties. But of late things were not working well. It was not going down well with those in my party as well”, said Kumar.

Kumar will serve as acting chief minister till a new government is formed.

The national president of the BJP, Jagat Prakash Nadda, is anticipated to arrive here at approximately 3 p.m. and will be present at the swearing-in event. The BJP is expected to express its support.

However, Kumar said, “If the parties that I had previously aligned with get together again, things will happen,” without revealing the cards. Everyone will learn.”
