Vibhav Kumar, accused of assaulting Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP and former Delhi Women’s Commission chairperson Swati Maliwal, has approached the Supreme Court. He has challenged the Delhi High Court’s rejection of his bail plea in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Vibhav Kumar’s bail plea on July 26.
The Delhi High Court rejected Vibhav Kumar’s bail plea, citing concerns that granting bail could lead to tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses, as the investigation is ongoing. During the hearing, Swati Maliwal’s lawyer mentioned two video clips released after the FIR, showing her alone in a room and arguing with a police officer. The court questioned the claim of tampering with the clips, to which Maliwal’s lawyer pointed out signs suggesting alterations.
AAP party officials back Vibhav Kumar
Several party officials supported Vibhav Kumar, blaming the complainant and highlighting threats sent to Swati Maliwal. The court acknowledged the threats but noted they couldn’t be linked to the petitioner yet. Vibhav Kumar’s lawyer argued that the reasons for his arrest were not disclosed before his arrest.
Vibhav Kumar has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging his arrest, seeking bail and claiming his arrest was illegal. He also demanded compensation for being unlawfully detained. Vibhav Kumar allegedly attacked Maliwal at Chief Minister Kejriwal’s residence on May 13 and was arrested on May 18. Earlier, bail pleas were rejected by the Tis Hazari Court on June 7 and another on May 27 by the session court. The FIR against him was filed on May 16.
