The Supreme Court underscored the importance of a comprehensive investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, emphasizing the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) commitment to uncovering the complete truth.
In a hearing on Tuesday, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, leading a three-judge bench that included Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, addressed the recent status report submitted by the CBI.
The court refrained from disclosing specifics about the ongoing investigation to avoid compromising its progress.
Chief Justice Chandrachud stated, “We have looked at the status report of the CBI. Making a disclosure today about what the CBI is doing will jeopardize the course of the investigation. The line of further CBI investigation intends to unearth absolute truth and further truth. All of you know, apart from the principal, there has been an arrest of SHO himself. He is in custody of CBI and significant pieces of investigation will be revealed in the course of the investigation.”
Additionally, the court acknowledged the CBI’s response to prior inquiries, including the submission of a statutory challan related to the post-mortem of the victim and accompanying documentation.
The bench further stressed the necessity of allowing the CBI sufficient time to conduct its investigation thoroughly, warning against any premature closure that could undermine the probe’s objectives.
CBI Arrests Former Tala Police Chief In Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case
In a recent development, the CBI arrested Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of the Tala Police Station, which oversees the RG Kar Medical College area.
Mondal was in charge when authorities discovered the junior doctor’s body on 9 August.
Additionally, Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Hospital, previously detained for financial irregularities, has also been implicated in the rape and murder case.
The Supreme Court had previously directed the CBI to submit a fresh status report by 17 September and reviewed the agency’s progress in response to its earlier orders.
The court noted, “We have now seen the further line of the ongoing investigation. We do not want to comment on anything in the open court. We will give you a week’s time to tell us what further leads have emerged in the course of the investigation.”
Taking suo moto cognizance of the case, the Supreme Court described the incident as ‘horrific’ and highlighted broader concerns about the safety of medical professionals in India.
The court has mandated the creation of a National Task Force (NTF) to propose measures for safeguarding medical staff nationwide.
This task force, established following the court’s directive, will consult various medical associations to develop effective recommendations for improving the safety, working conditions, and well-being of doctors.
The Supreme Court’s intervention reflects its deep concern for the protection of healthcare professionals and its commitment to addressing systemic issues within the medical sector.
