According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma instructed officials to conduct a socioeconomic assessment of the state’s five indigenous Muslim communities.
“In a meeting held at Janata Bhawan, HCM Dr @himantabiswa directed the officials concerned to carry out a socio-economic assessment of Assam’s Indigenous Muslim communities (Goria, Moria, Deshi, Syed & Jolha),” CMO posted on X.
These results will help the government determine the best course of action to take in order to fully advance the sociopolitical and educational status of the state’s indigenous minorities, it was added.
Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said, “BJP does not need the votes of ‘Miya’ people of ‘char’ (riverine sandbar) areas for the next 10 years, till they reform themselves by leaving aside practices such as child marriage.
“When elections come, I myself will request them not to vote for us. Vote for us if you follow family planning, stop child marriage and shed fundamentalism.”
“To complete these, it will take 10 years. We will seek votes after 10 years, not now,” Chief Minister said.
In the meantime, the Chief Minister of Assam reported that more than 800 people were detained on Tuesday as part of the state’s ongoing crackdown on child marriages.
