Shashi Tharoor on Potential Contest Against Rajeev Chandrasekhar : No Need for Offensive Tactics

In a recent statement, Shashi Tharoor reflected on his 15-year political journey, emphasizing his approach of not resorting to attacks on critics and opponents. With the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha election looming and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominating Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar from his constituency, Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM candidate, making it a three-way contest.

Tharoor recalled his victory over the CPM in the past and highlighted the significance of Pannyan Raveendran’s candidacy, given his prior tenure as the sitting MP. However, Tharoor cautioned against underestimating the BJP, which has secured second place in the last two Lok Sabha elections in the region, indicating their growing influence.

Regarding Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Tharoor acknowledged his stature as a prominent business figure and former minister, expressing hope for a fair electoral competition. Tharoor reiterated his commitment to a dignified campaign, emphasizing that he has never found it necessary to attack adversaries throughout his political career.

Despite the alliance between the Congress and the CPM on a national level, the CPM’s decision to field Raveendran underscores the complexities of regional politics. Rajeev Chandrasekhar wasted no time in criticizing both the Congress and the CPM, accusing them of neglecting the aspirations of Kerala’s youth. He emphasized the urgent need for change, citing statistics indicating a dearth of job opportunities in the state over the past eight years.

The stage is set for a fiercely contested election in Thiruvananthapuram, with each candidate vying to articulate their vision for the constituency’s future and win the trust of the electorate. Ultimately, it will be up to the voters to decide who will represent their interests in Delhi.
