SC Orders Rape Convict Asaram To Make Appeal In High Court For Bail On Medical Grounds

The Supreme Court ordered the jailed rape convict, Asaram to return to the Rajasthan High Court with his appeal to stay the sentence against him. Additionally, the top court mandated that the high court take up the case.

Besides Asaram’s attorney asked the Supreme Court to permit his client to receive Ayurvedic therapy while being detained by the Maharashtra police. The counsel was then instructed by the court to make this request in the Rajasthan High Court as well.

In September 2023, the Supreme Court refused Asaram’s request for bail. Prior to that, in 2022, the Rajasthan High Court had refused him bail.

Asaram’s attorney requested for bail, claiming that his client, who is over 80 years old and afflicted with terrible illnesses, has been imprisoned for the previous nine years.

In April 2018, a court in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, found Asaram guilty of raping a youngster in his ashram in 2013 and sentenced him for life in jail. In the same case, the court condemned his two accomplices to 20 years in prison.

He was also found guilty in January 2023 of raping a woman from Surat at an ashram in Gujarat in 2013.
