Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has announced his resignation from the primary membership of the Congress party. Sanjay Nirupam, former Congress Rajya Sabha MP, claimed that Chavan’s decision stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the working style of a leader from Maharashtra.
In a post on ‘X’, Nirupam stated, “Ashok Chavan was undeniably an asset for the party. Some label him a liability or attribute his departure to pressure from the Enforcement Directorate, but these are rash judgments. His discontent primarily arose from the working methods of a Maharashtra leader.”

Nirupam, the former president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee, asserted that if the party had addressed Chavan’s concerns, his resignation could have been avoided. “He (Chavan) had communicated these grievances to the top leadership on several occasions. Had they been addressed promptly, this situation could have been averted,” added Nirupam.
Praising Chavan’s capabilities, Nirupam highlighted, “Ashok Chavan is a valuable asset, an adept organizer, deeply rooted in grassroots politics, and a dedicated leader. During the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Nanded last year, the entire leadership witnessed his potential firsthand.”
Expressing regret over Chavan’s departure, Nirupam emphasized, “His exit is a significant loss for the Congress. No one can fill the void left by him. It was solely our responsibility to nurture and support him.”

Earlier today, Ashok Chavan submitted his resignation to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Nana Patole. In his resignation letter, Chavan referred to his previous role as an MLA and highlighted his extensive political career, which included serving as an MP and his tenure as Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Chavan’s tenure as Chief Minister ended in November 2010 amid corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam. Despite his resignation from the primary membership of the party, his contributions to Maharashtra politics remain noteworthy.
