Saddened By The Loss Of Lives: PM Modi Condoles China Mine Tragedy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed deep sorrow over the fatalities caused by a mining accident in Shanxi Province, China. He extended his sympathies to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people, while wishing courage to the bereaved families.

In his message on X, PM Modi stated that the tragedy had deeply saddened him and expressed hope for the safe recovery of those still unaccounted for.

A powerful gas explosion occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County in Shanxi Province on Friday evening. More than 200 workers were reportedly inside the mine when the blast took place.

The incident led to the deaths of 82 individuals, while several others remained trapped, prompting large-scale rescue efforts.

Authorities reported that 123 people sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.

A small number of the injured are in critical or serious condition, while the majority suffered minor injuries.

Rescue teams are working in shifts to continue operations inside the mine and search for those still missing.

Xi Jinping instructed officials to intensify rescue operations and ensure immediate medical assistance for the injured. He also directed authorities to carry out a detailed probe into the cause of the accident.

Officials indicated that the investigation would establish responsibility among concerned agencies and the mining company, with strict penalties to be imposed where necessary.

Mining accidents continue to pose challenges in China despite enhanced safety regulations in recent years.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of strict compliance with safety standards.

Earlier this year, another mining incident in Shaanxi Province trapped workers after an underground tunnel collapsed. The incident highlighted persistent safety risks.

Search and rescue efforts remain active as teams continue working to locate the missing workers and stabilise the situation.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for stronger safety measures in hazardous industries.
