During a speech to members of the Indian community in Singapore, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated that Article 370 was initially intended as a temporary provision in the Indian Constitution. He emphasized that its extension had adverse effects, including fostering a climate of separatism, violence, and terrorism in Jammu Kashmir, and Ladakh. Jaishankar highlighted that this hindered the implementation of progressive laws in these regions.
The Minister pointed out that the decision to abrogate Article 370 in August 2019 was aimed at addressing these issues. This move resulted in the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and the establishment of two Union Territories.

Jaishankar underscored the positive outcomes of this decision, stating that the benefits of the change are now evident. He emphasized the importance of addressing security concerns and ensuring the extension of progressive laws to enhance development in the region.
Currently, on a three-day visit to Singapore, Mr. Jaishankar expressed these views while engaging with the Indian community.
