Rajnath Singh: India’s Defence Production Surges To Record Rs 1.46 Lakh Crore

India’s defence production has surged to an all-time high of Rs 1.46 lakh crore in 2024-25, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Summit in New Delhi.

This remarkable growth marks a significant leap from Rs 43,000 crore just over a decade ago, with the private sector contributing more than Rs 32,000 crore to this achievement.

Exports of defence equipment have also seen a dramatic increase, rising from around Rs 600-700 crore ten years ago to a record Rs 24,000 crore today.

Singh emphasised that Make in India has been vital for both national security and economic prosperity.

The Defence Minister highlighted the critical role of indigenous systems in recent military operations such as ‘Operation Sindoor’.

“Our indigenous weapons, systems, and components are now supplied to nearly 100 countries,” Singh said, underscoring the growing global trust in Indian defence technology.

More than 16,000 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of the defence supply chain, creating employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands across the country.

These enterprises have become integral to India’s self-reliance mission.

Advancing Aerospace: The AMCA Project

Singh announced that the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme would usher in a new era of private sector involvement alongside public sector units.

This collaborative model for developing a fifth-generation fighter jet represents a bold milestone in India’s aerospace ambitions.

“The plan is to develop five prototypes of the AMCA, followed by series production,” Singh said. “This is a key milestone for the Make in India programme and the nation’s aerospace sector.”

The Defence Minister highlighted how strengthened indigenous defence capabilities helped the Indian Armed Forces take decisive action against terrorism in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during ‘Operation Sindoor’.

He reaffirmed India’s stance on PoK, stating it remains an integral part of India.

Singh expressed confidence that those geographically separated will eventually reunite voluntarily, reiterating the government’s commitment to the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.

Singh called on Indian industry to prioritise national interests over individual company gains.

He urged innovators, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers to unite, saying, “If securing company interests is your karma, safeguarding national interests is your dharma.”

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has become the world’s fourth-largest economy, with a growing footprint in defence technology production and exports.

Singh emphasised that global demand for Indian high-end defence systems is both a market and a mark of respect for India’s capabilities.

India is now actively preparing for new-age warfare technologies. “Our progress in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Defence, Unmanned Systems, and Space-Based Security is being recognised worldwide,” Singh added, signalling India’s emergence as a cutting-edge defence technology hub.

This surge in defence production and exports demonstrates India’s growing self-reliance and strategic autonomy, positioning the country as a formidable global player in the defence sector.
